How It Works
Mentors and Proteges start by completing an online profile. From there, proteges can search for and select a mentor. When the mentor accepts the protege's invitation, the relationship begins.
The pair work together to establish goals, develop an action plan, and measure progress. They communicate primarily online, but may decide to talk on the phone or even meet in person.
Sharon was a Navy O4 in a very male-dominated career field. She was encountering some disrespectful behavior on the part of a few senior enlisted males in her unit, but was unsure how to handle it. A senior woman in her career field agreed to mentor Sharon. She immediately explained that the behavior Sharon was experiencing was indeed gender-motivated, and that it was crucial to deal with it swiftly. The mentor and Sharon role-played what she would say and do when the behavior arose again. Sharon was surprised at how effective her actions were and how they engendered a deeper respect for her among all her sailors. She felt she was a better, more confident leader as a result of the experience!
The MilitaryWomen eMentor Program is open to ALL military women and veterans of the U.S. military services: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Merchant Marines and Navy.
